Prof. Katherine Ryan receives Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship

Dr. Katherine Ryan, Associate Professor, has been awarded one of six Killam Accelerator Research Fellowships. These awards recognize exceptional early-career researchers at our Vancouver and Okanagan campuses who have demonstrated outstanding research achievement and the potential for significant impact in their fields of scholarship. Prof. Taka Momose receives Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Funding

Prof. Taka Momose is leading one of three UBC Science projects that have received $13.7 million through the Canada Foundation for Innovaton (CFI) funding. Prof. Taka Momose and Makoto Fujiwara have been funded $4.6 million for his HAICU: Hydrogen Antihydrogen Infrastructure at Canadian Universities for Quantum Innovations in Antimatter Science, in partnership with Simon Fraser University and the University of Calgary.

Aakar Chatha and Jane Fu Receive CIC Awards in Chemistry

Aakar Chatha has won the CIC Second Year Award in Chemistry for his academic performance in second year chemistry courses. Jane Fu has wond the CIC Third Year Award in Chemistry for her academic performance in senior chemistry courses. Both were awarded for their undergraduate performance in the academic year of 2019-2020.

Christopher Walters wins the new CGSS Prize in Science Outreach

Dr. David C. Walker, Professor Emeritus, passed away on October 9th, 2020. He was 86 years old.

Self-Driving Lab Demonstration Published in Science Advances

The Berlinguette and Hein Groups at UBC, in collaboration with the Aspuru-Guzik Group at the University of Toronto, have developed a self-driving laboratory to accelerate the R&D cycle for thin-film materials. The manuscript published today in Science Advances details their first demonstration of this self-driving laboratory, called “Ada”, for the development of materials used in advanced solar cells.

How UBC Chemistry is Adjusting to Remote Work under COVID-19

“I’m definitely itching to get back to the lab,” says Don Mayder (PhD candidate). Like other departments on campus, the physical spaces in the chemistry department are now closed. Classes moved online Friday, March 13th, and staff were asked to work from home on Tuesday, March 16th until further notice. Labs were asked to end experiments and close by the end of that same week.

Dr. Wilma Ethel Elias Scholarship in Chemistry

Dr. Wilma Ethel Elias (1925-2018) was the first woman to obtain a PhD from the University of British Columbia.
