In celebration of the 41^st International Women’s Day, UBC’s first graduate degree awarded to chemist Ruth Vivian Fulton in 1919 was highlighted in the Vancouver Sun article on Monday, March 7^th, 2016. Ruth’s thesis title was “A study of the estimation of iron and the separation of manganese from iron by phenyl-nitroso-hydroxylamine ammonium (cupferron)”.

Dr. Berlinguette has been awarded the E. W. R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship as a recognition for his research and accomplishments. Up to six Steacie Fellowships are awarded annually to enhance the career development of outstanding and highly promising scientists and engineers who are faculty members of Canadian universities. A pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme that oxidizes an unactivated carbon-carbon bond

Enzymes use organic cofactors to facilitate diverse chemical transformations. One of these cofactors, pyridoxal phosphate (PLP), is best known for its ability to stabilize anions, which enables reactions such as transaminations, critical in the breakdown of amino acids. However, PLP is rarely known to react with oxygen or to catalyze reactions on unactivated carbons.

Congratulations to Dr. Michael Wolf! Dr. Wolf has been awarded the Rio Tinto Alcan Award for his distinguished contribution to the fields of inorganic chemistry.
