CDI is excited to host Prof. Gregor Wolbring from University of Calgary for a virtual visit at 10:00-11:00 am on Jan 19th (Thursday). He will be giving a presentation on EDI through an Ability Studies lens, relevant to the recent accessibility discussions in our department.
Dr. Gregor Wolbring is a tenured Professor at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine (Community Health Science, Program in Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies). He is presently a member of the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), Karlsruhe, Germany and a fellow of the Institute for Science, Society and Policy, University of Ottawa, Canada. He has obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Frankfurt and Max Planck Institute for Biophysics, Germany; Supervisors, Professor Hartmut Michel and Dr. Neil Cook. He later began his Post-Doc at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine, Dept. of Physiology and Biophysics (1992-1998) with Professor Paul Schnetkamp.
Some of his areas of engagement are: ability studies including governance of ability expectations, disability studies, equity, diversity and inclusion, role narratives, risk narratives, governance of emerging and existing sciences and technologies (e.g. nanoscale science and technology, molecular manufacturing, aging, longevity and immortality, cognitive sciences, neuromorphic engineering, genetics, synthetic biology, robotics, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, machine learning, machine reasoning, automatization, brain machine interfaces, sensors), impact of science and technology on marginalized populations, especially people with disabilities the governance of bodily enhancement, sustainability issues, emergency and disaster management, environmental activism, environmental education, EcoHealth, resilience, ethics issues, health policy issues, health equity, arts, human rights and sport.
