Abstract

The structure of a second monoclinic polymorph of 1-carboxymethyl-3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyridinone (3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-oxopyridine-1-acetic acid, C8H9NO4) is reported. The molecule has a delocalized zwitterionic structure much like that reported for form 1 [Zhang, Rettig & Orvig (1992). Can. J. Chem. 70, 763-7701. The structure contains a legitimate intermolecular C-H ... 0 hydrogen bond [H ... 0 = 2.18 (2), C ... 0 = 3.155 (3) angstrom, C-H ... 0 = 165 (2)-degrees]. The two forms differ primarily in the details of the hydrogen bonding
