Abstract:
Chemists in industry work to develop many materials that are indispensable to everyday life. One of the largest applications of a chemist’s expertise is in the development of catalysts for the production of polyolefins. These materials find use in food packaging, medical devices, automotive parts, diapers and hundreds of other areas. This talk will describe the scale of the industry, the challenges that arise in making polymers with novel properties and the incredible complexity that is involved in making something as simple as a plastic bag.
