BUILDING EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN:

The Building Emergency Response Plan (BERP) contains emergency response instructions for major emergencies such as fires, earthquakes, explosions by hazardous materials, chemical spills, etc. The BERP also contains a current list of Floor Wardens, Building Wardens and Emergency Directors for each building.

INJURIES:

  1. For serious injuries immediately call 911.
  2. For both serious and minor injuries call UBC First Aid at 604-822-4444.
  3. Immediately report the incident to your direct supervisor. For students and TAs the supervisor is the course or lab instructor.
  4. Report the incident as soon as possible to www.cairs.ubc.ca. Both the person involved and the supervisor MUST submit a report.

EMERGENCY SPILL RESPONSE:

For spills larger than 1L of toxic, flammable, or highly hazardous materials, and/or for spills that have an immediate threat to anyone’s safety, follow the procedures listed below.

  1. Immediately evacuate the area, and call 911.
  2. Do not attempt to clean up the spill.
  3. Go to the pre-designated meeting location of the building and do not re-enter the area.
  4. As soon as it is possible, report the incident to Campus Security at 604-822-2222, and request for UBC First Aid to attend to any injuries and/or chemical exposure incidents. Campus Security will immediately contact UBC SRS for support.
  5. HAZMAT and/or the fire department will help with proper spill clean-up procedures.
  6. Do not re-enter the affected areas until the Emergency Responders (HAZMAT and/or the fire department) have notified everyone when it is safe to re-enter.

The emergency response procedures listed below includes step-by-step instructions for injuries, spills and other incidents. The UBC CHEM Emergency Poster has a list of emergency contacts and non-emergency contacts. Copies of the poster are available outside of CHEM A237.
