Abstract: There is widespread interest in the synthesis of halogenated compounds because of their use as synthetic intermediates in complex molecule synthesis, and because of their prevalence in natural products and medicinal agents. The hypervalent iodine reagents PhICl2 and TolIF2 are easily prepared, stable solids that serve as versatile surrogates for their respective elemental halogens. We have discovered that chlorination and fluorination reactions that employ these reagents can be accomplished in good yield, on a variety of differing substrates, and this seminar will highlight our recent progress and current investigations into this chemistry.
