BSc Major in Chemistry

A Major in chemistry can be tailored to focus on a number of different sub-disciplines including: applied chemistry, biological chemistry, chemical analysis, chemical physics, chemical synthesis, environmental chemistry, materials chemistry, and theoretical chemistry.

BSc Honours Chemistry

An Honours degree in chemistry provides even greater opportunities, including pursuing an independent research project in your final year. The Honours program usually provides intense specialization in a single field or combination of fields, and is the normal route to graduate study.

BSc Combined Honours Programs

Combined honours degrees provide the ability to expand your horizons at the interface of chemistry and related scientific disciplines. Our programs include the following:

  • Chemical Physics

Co-operative Education Program

Co-operative Education is a process of education which integrates academic study with related and supervised work experience in co-operating employer organizations.

A Co-operative Education program is available for students in Chemistry. The program is intended to help prepare interested and qualified students for research careers in industry with sixteen months of work placement supervised by practicing professionals. Faculty advisors also visit students at their place of work and provide advice on technical reports required of all students in the Program.

There are many disciplines within Chemistry; Major and Honours students may wish to direct their elective credits towards a specific focus area in chemistry. Students are encouraged to use these recommendations as a preliminary guide to assist in developing a personalized list of courses that best matches their interests and career goals.

Applied Chemistry
Students interested in pursuing careers in industrial and/or commercial chemistry after obtaining their B.Sc. degree should consider the following options. Students choosing from the following will obtain a strong foundation in modern laboratory methods, as well as industrially-relevant chemical processes and applications.

Biological Chemistry
Students with a strong interest in applying the principles of chemistry to the molecular foundations of biology should consider the following courses. A combined Honours degree in biological chemistry (CHEM/BIOL) is also available and is designed for those students wishing to pursue graduate studies in this area.

Chemical Analysis
Students wishing to pursue careers in the analytical sciences, including but not limited to quality control, environmental analysis, etc. should consider the following options. Students choosing from the following will focus on modern analytical methods and their application in chemical speciation and quantification.

Chemical Physics
Students with interests at the interface of chemistry and physics should consider the following recommended courses. A combined Honours in Chemical Physics (CHEM/PHYS) is also available and is strongly recommended for those students wishing to pursue graduate studies in this area.

Chemical Synthesis
Students with a strong interest in synthetic chemistry and its uses in the design and synthesis of novel molecules (including pharmaceuticals and natural products) should consider the following recommendations. Students anticipating further studies in synthetic chemistry at the graduate level should strongly consider pursuing an Honours degree in Chemistry.

Environmental Chemistry
Students with an interest in the environmental sciences and the role of chemistry within this field should consider the following courses. These suggestions will provide students with a broad education in the environmental sciences, as well as the fundamentals of chemistry.

Materials Chemistry
Students interested in the newly emerging field of materials chemistry, including functional materials and optical materials and their application to the electronics and related industries may wish to consider the following courses. Student seeking to pursue graduate studies in this area are strongly recommended to pursue an Honours degree.

Theoretical Chemistry
Students with a strong interest in the fundamental theories that can be used to explain and predict chemical behaviour, should consider taking the following courses. The suggested courses will provide students with the proper background in both theoretical chemistry and mathematics. Students looking to pursue their studies in this area at the graduate level should also strongly consider the combined Honours program in mathematics and chemistry.
