UBC Chemistry Summer Research Awards

The deadline for Summer 2017 is: January 31, 2017

The Department of Chemistry is pleased to offer summer research opportunities for outstanding undergraduate students. These awards are meant to stimulate interest in research in chemistry, and to provide opportunities to gain research experience in an academic setting. Two types of awards are available, USRA and SURS, with differing eligibility and application procedures. These are detailed below.

The normal duration of these awards is 16 consecutive weeks with students working at UBC from the end of April or the beginning of May until approximately the end of August. Projects in all areas of chemical research are available. Applicants are encouraged to browse the Departmental website, particularly under the "Research" and "Faculty" links, to familiarize themselves with the breadth of research opportunities available. Students are also encouraged to contact specific faculty members whose research may be of particular interest, and inquire about appropriate summer projects.

LIST OF PROJECTS FOR SUMMER 2017

*Note: for both the USRA and SURS, students should provide three choices for supervisor in order of preference.  The selection committee will try to ensure their 1st choice is granted.

Students who have already contacted a specific faculty member and have arranged a summer project should convey this information in their covering letter, and the Department will ensure the proper paperwork is submitted for that project. Students who have not arranged a project with a specific faculty member will have a project assigned to them. In the latter case, the student should describe in their covering letter the areas of chemistry which interest them so they can be matched with an appropriate project.

Submission Details

Applications should be mailed to:
Scholarship Committee Chair
Department of Chemistry
UBC Summer Research Awards
2036 Main Mall
University of British Columbia
Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z1

Alternatively, applications may be submitted in person to the Undergraduate Program Coordinator in the Chemistry office (Chemistry D223).

Inquiries about these awards or application procedures can be directed to summerawards@chem.ubc.ca.

*** Domestic Students who apply for an NSERC USRA will automatically be considered for SusSyn and SURS as well.  No additional application is needed in this case.

NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA)

Recipients of this award will receive a minimum of $6,076.00 for the award duration as well as a travel allowance as per NSERC guidelines. This award is jointly funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Chemistry Department.

USRA awards are restricted to students in a Major, Combined Major, Combined Major, Honours or Combined Honours Chemistry program who are Canadian Citizens or Landed Immigrants, and who will have completed at least one year of undergraduate studies with a minimum of a B average.

Application Process

Applications for an NSERC USRA will consist of:

On the NSERC website, select "On-line System Login", if you already have an NSERC account, or to: “First-Time User? Please Register” if you need an account. Handwritten application forms will not be accepted. Part II of NSERC Form 202 is completed by the Department.

Contrary to the instructions provided on the NSERC website, application materials should NOT be sent to a specific faculty member but instead sent to the Department at the address above.

NSERC CREATE Sustainable Synthesis Undergraduate Research Scholarship (SusSyn)

The NSERC CREATE Sustainable Synthesis program is a training program designed in collaboration with Canadian Industrial Partners to provide industry ready graduates, with a focus on addressing challenges in waste generation, environmental compatibility, energy efficiency and alternative energy sources.  For more information on our program and to find out more about our principal investigators, please visit www.css.chem.ubc.ca .

Recipients of this award will receive a minimum of $6,076.00 for the award duration as per NSERC guidelines. This award is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) CREATE training program.

CREATE SusSyn Undergraduate awards are available to students in a Major, Combined Major, Honours or Combined Honours Chemistry program who will have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies with a minimum of a B+ average. Both Canadian and non-Canadian students are eligible. Students selected for this award must select a project provided by a CREATE SusSyn Principal Investigator (see www.css.chem.ubc.ca) in order to be eligible for this award.

Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute Awards

Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute Awards: Open to undergraduate students of any nationality, this award offers students the opportunity to work with researchers in SBQMI in the exciting area of quantum materials. This includes gaining small scale control of atomic materials and their physical properties, identifying, developing and understanding new materials, and exploring their limits and opportunities for applications in areas such as information processing, and energy conversion and storage. SBQMI is a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with researchers tackling problems by theoretical modelling, experimentation, characterization and device development.

Summer stipends are equivalent to NSERC levels with $4,500 of this amount subsidized by SBQMI through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, but award recipients will receive a minimum of $6,076.00 for the award duration (16 weeks). To apply for this exciting program:

  • visit the SBQMI website (http://qmi.ubc.ca/) to identify the Principal Investigators whose work is of most interest to you;
  • write each of them a brief letter explaining which aspects of their research are of interest and what you have to offer in this area;
  • submit a formal application through UBC’s Chemistry USRA program. Applications should be mailed to:
