Safe Handling,
Use and Storage of Hazardous Chemicals

Description and Hazard
Oxidizing materials readily yield oxygen or its equivalents
to stimulate the combustion (oxidation) of organic matter
- May cause fire if in contact with flammable and combustible
materials, even without a source of ignition or oxygen
- May increase the speed and intensity of a fire
- May cause materials normally noncombustible, to burn
rapidly
- May react with other chemicals to produce toxic gas
Examples: organic peroxides, nitrates, perchlorates
Handling and Storage
- If reaction can be violent, use barrier to isolate it
- Use only minimum amount necessary
- Keep work area free of materials that could react with
oxidizers
- Keep a way from incompatible materials as reducing agents
and flammable and combustible materials
- Segregate oxidizing acids (nitric acid) from organic
acids (acetic acid)
- Store separately to avoid contact with flammable combustible
materials and reducing agents
- Store in fire resistant, cool and well ventilated area
