UBC Chemistry employs numerous programs and activities throughout the year to promote chemistry to the broader community.

Currently, the department facilitates outreach in the following ways:

Take Our Kids to Work Day

Interested kids are welcome to visit our Department for "Take Our Kids to Work" Day! On November 2 2011, we ran a tour of a our facilities and shops in the morning and ended with our tasty liquid nitrogen ice cream. The next event will be held in November 2012.

OCTOBER
Chemistry: Beyond the Magic

Department of Chemistry Open House - October 22, 2011

In celebration of the International Year of Chemistry and National Chemistry Week, the department opened its doors to the community. A variety of activities kept kids of all ages (and their parents) entertained including exciting chemistry shows, fun hands-on activities like creating slime and building marshmallow molecules, and liquid nitrogren ice cream.

SEPTEMBER
West Point Grey Girl Guides
The Department of Chemistry partnered with the West Point Grey Girl Guides to promote science to youth in the community. Girls and their families discovered the magic behind everyday chemical phenomena. This special event, held on September 24, 2011 included presentations and demonstrations on such topics as thermodynamics, kinetics, organic chemistry and polymers. All participants received a custom UBC Chemistry commemorative crest at the closing ceremony. This event was part of the International Year of Chemistry.
